More than half of Columbia County Teachers of the Year are GRU graduates

AUGUSTA, GA. – The Columbia County Board of Education released the list of Teacher of the Year winners for the county’s school system. Of the 31 schools in the county, more than half of the Teacher of the Year winners are graduates of Georgia Regents University.

“A lot of programs teach theory, but this shows that we prepare teachers who are ready for the classroom from day one,” said Dr. Cindi Chance, Dean of the College of Education. “Most of these winners have advanced degrees, so it also highlights the need for continuing education.”

Georgia Regents University alumni who were named Teacher of the Year in Columbia County schools are:

All five finalists for 2014 Teacher of the Year – Kim Buchanan, Karen Collins, Izabella Kean, Anne Tucker and Rebecca Walls – and the winner for of 2014 Media Specialist of the Year, were GRU graduates. (Click here to see previous story) The Media Specialist of the Year is Delta Casey (MEd, 1998; EdS, 2001), of Greenbrier Middle School.

Of the five finalists, one will be chosen as the Columbia County Teacher of the Year in October at a special banquet. The Teacher of the Year and the Media Specialist of the Year will represent Columbia County in November in Atlanta at the state level. In May, the Georgia Department of Education will name the Georgia Teacher of the Year and the Georgia Media Specialist of the Year.
