AUGUSTA, GA — Early mornings in China – and in American parks, health care organizations and community centers – people practice an ancient tradition that promotes a balance of body and mind: Tai Chi. Georgia Regents University will offer the public a month of free tai chi classes in the Kinesiology department in March.
“The movements of tai chi promote flexibility, balance, and improved range of motion. It helps improve concentration, mood, and relaxation,” said Dr. Steven Page, chair of the GRU Department of Kinesiology in the College of Education.
Tai Chi is a form of martial arts that uses gentle, relaxing exercises with mental focus to develop inner peace. It includes movement, meditation, and breathing to improve health and well-being. Major health organizations, like the Arthritis Foundation, recommend tai chi because it assists balance of body and mind. It is particularly useful for people with arthritis or other joint and muscle disorders, due to its low-impact nature.
The classes will run March 3-21, and are being offered in conjunction with the opening of the Confucius Institute at GRU, a cultural exchange and language center. The schedule is listed below. For more information, call 706-737-1468. Click here to register.
